Here is Shinzato Sensei’s (Kashiba Juku) translation of the article: “Forceless Force is Forceful”

 From Bill Lucas

This phrase sounds contradictory, but I sensed it’s existence as I experienced physical contact with Mr. Katsuhiko Shinzato, who is a head of Okinawa Karate-Do Shorin-ryu Kishaba Juku. Without any forceful impact on my hand I was easily off-balanced and fell down when he made a soft touch against my attacking hand. He seemed to keep his whole body relaxed when confronting me. It is a very novel method that he has been developing based on the body mechanics in Naihanchi kata since he was in his 60s.

It is said that Naihanchi has the dual purposes: one is to build the body by tensing and hardening muscles, the other is to foster a pliable body by relaxing muscles. The latter is what Kishaba Juku utilizes so Naihanchi is performed with relaxed muscles from beginning to end. As a result, each of the motions of Naihanchi looks rather flowing and elastic.

A muscular body is built with flexor muscles. A fluid body is fostered by extensor muscles. No matter how hard you try to develop muscles, they will decline with age. On the contrary, when you gain a body of flexibility along with its bony structure, you can be an active practitioner for a lifetime. This is the main reason why Kishaba Juku focuses on practicing all of Kata with extensor muscles.

Kishaba Juku has adopted three ways of training: (1) they train themselves by tensing joints and muscles as seen in most of karate dojo, (2) they practice with Naihanchi stance (relaxed hip joints) by activating extensor muscles, and (3) they practice the same Naihanchi stance employing a soft touch to contact targets.

They call them respectively:
(1) Hard contact method,
(2) Light contact method, and
(3) Soft contact method.

Above all, when you advance to the 3rd stage, you will be able surpass a larger or more muscular opponent with the relaxed power that you gain. It is a unique method that prevents an opponent from reacting immediately regardless of his physical strength.

The strength of relaxed body can be likened to a model of anti-earthquake architecture which is called a ‘tensegrity.’ Due to the stability and flexibility of the relaxed body, you can excel against any opponent in the physical actions and techniques of both defense and offense. All in all, a relaxed body may appear powerless, but it actually generates more vital power than that of a solid and rigid body.

Mr. Shinzato was born in 1939. He entered University of the Ryukyus in 1957 and began to practice karate at a karate club on the campus. After graduation, he became an English teacher in Junior high school in Naha. He was granted a special scholarship from American administration in Okinawa to study at Indiana University in 1964. After returning to Okinawa, he resumed karate at the headquarter of The World Shorin-ryu Karate-do Federation whose president was Master Shoshin Nagamine in 1967. He left the organization in 1981 and continued further training under Chokei Kishaba, who was the most efficient among practitioners. “Okinawa Karate-do Shorin-ryu Kshaba Juku” was establised in honor of Kishaba sensei in 1998. Mr. Shinzato has now been a head of the Kishaba Juku since the year of 2000, when Kishaba sensei passed away.

Kishaba sensei was quite skeptical of the traditional discipline of Okinawa karate, which is kata-centered training and puts excessive emphasis on body toughening. His main goal was how to be skillful and efficient in the usage of his body and the manipulation of techniques in order to bring kata alive and to be practical in a kumite match. Mr. Shinzato has been doing further research and practice such that he was able to develop a new approach to karate, that is, the Soft contact method, which he is convinced is capable of cultivating unknown potentials of the human body regardless of age or sex.

Mr. Shinzato became 80 this past February. Practicing karate is a part of his daily life. Whenever he practices alone or with his students or karate visitors from outside of Okinawa, he always enjoys finding something new of body mechanics so that he cannot stop training.

Regarding kata performance and physical discipline, Okinawa Karate is considered to be sufficiently preserved and handed down from generation to generation. What about an aspect of skills of karate as an art of self- defense? Mr. Shinzato seems to strive to explore practical and useful method of making the well-built body active and brisk in a desperate situation. He is pursuing a legitimate art which is acceptable to different kind of martial arts.

Pain – Real Pain

The Chinese designation of that point 1/2 between the testea and the anus is an extremely sensitive area.  It is called the Hun Yan point. (point B above)

Tris Sutrisno a Shotokan/Tjimande instructor I was once assisting for a demo. struck me there from him being on the floor. A simple middle finger strike.

I learned a new definition of pain as well as learning how to fly. smile emoticon

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

the Hun Yuan Point or Death from Below

Victor Donald Smith Truthfully, the most pain I ever experienced in a strike, and i literally jumped high. There is no muscle protection there, exactly at the point directly below the top of the head. But rarely discussed. The strikes do exist but no one talks about them ever.

The use of the Hun Yuan point is one of tactical necessity.

As I wrote if finding yourself on the floor and they prepare to stomp kick you, you can strike up with a single finger nukite strike to that point. It depends on who lands their movement first.

It can be used from the front or the rear, but employing other technique with it from the front, can deflect their awareness from the actual attack intended.

I think the obvious example would be the U strike from the front. The upper strike drawing the focus of their eyes towards it, then the 2nd strike could become a hooking finger strike rising into that point.

Another example would be the versions of Gojushiho which include the rising crane strike to be followed by a descending crane strike. Scooping that Crane strike from below would be unanticipated.

Likewise a rising toe kick from the front in the hun yuan point can be very unexpected.

But I suspect it got the greatest use from the rear of the attacker, based on the best defense is an offense they do not anticipate. And attack from the rear fits that exactly.

All of the attacks mentioned work well when they strike from behind.

And when you consider that part of the art’s development was to be a guard, anticipating an attack and preventing it would be high on the list.

Of course this does not exclude other possibilities, ones that do not use this point. But one likely wanted their available tool box to be full.

Interview with Taira Kazuo, August 29, 1997
Harbor Hotel, Tairagawa, Gushikawa Shi, Okinawa

This explains several things.

1.     Taira Kazuo remember's that Kyan Chotoku taught a Naifanchi (Naihanchi). This is important as some other branches that stem from Kyan Chotoku claim Kyan did not teach Naifanchi kata.

2.     Second, again other branches that stem from Kyan Chotoku claim Kyan did not teach sai techniques. For years I said Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei learned basic sai from Kyan Chotoku and then created Kyan Chotoku no sai (Kyan no sai) and Kusanku Sai after basic sai he learned from Kyan Sensei.

3.     Again, other branches that stem from Kyan Chotoku claim Kyan Sensei taught a 3/4 twist punch.

4.     According to interviews with both Taira Kazuo and Nakazato Joen, they never saw Kyan Chotoku ever use muchness teach a 3/4 twist punch, and Nakazato Joen studied with Kyan Sensei from 1937 to 1943 at the Agricultural School in Kadena and at Kyan Chotoku's dojo at the Hija River bridge in Yomitan.

Five hand formations of Uchina-Di (Okinawa-Te)

Of the Okinawan Art prior to karate

The introduction of karate into the Okinawan Schools

I have just translated this and it places the introduction of karate into the Okinawan Schools in a different light than I have seen before. Of course the translation is far from the best, but enough meaning comes through to consider what might have been the past.  - Victor

As I read this getting karate into  the Okinawan schools involved more than a bit of chicanery to get of past the Japanese School Council  rules. And the original intention may not have been what was to be intended in the long run. Things take on a life of their own, and what happens becomes what happened, history. But just perhaps all the ‘school boy karate’ rants are not the whole story of a ploy that worked.

I am not a professional Japanese translator; this is a translation I have obtained with the use of the Bing Translator. Such tools are often flawed regarding martial terminology, but personally I would rather use them gaining whatever understanding presents it.

We uploaded an article of "Karate Taiso (Gymnastics)".

Karhand  (karate?) Gymnastics               NEW! 2019-04-29 21:28:20

History of Karate In 1905, Karhand (karate?) was adopted by the old system of Okinawa Prefecture Junior High School and the Okinawa normal schools. It is not because "Karashina" was able to be said the department of Medicine.

It is a meaning of having taught it in the gymnastics department at that time although the class of the physical education was said gymnastics. Well, the word "Tang Hand gymnastics" appears just from that time.

For instance, the following sentences are in the memoirs of Tokuda Yasusadada.

A sense of Tang My memories are various, but I want to describe the movement mainly. At the beginning of his studies, he had been practicing judo and sumo. The practice of the base Naihan chi, etc. was started in Okinawa Bank site of the Shuri Kururanmanabu ruins at the designers of the Okinawan kunatake, and other students volunteer 20 at the beginning of Karatashiro

The so-called Karohand (karate?) gymnastics that was imposed on the time of gymnastics was born (Hiroshi Kinjo [from Karhand to Karate] 367 pages).

Tokuda is a student of old system Junior high school at that time, and the above is talking about circumstances before it is adopted to the school just by Karhand (karate?). The author imagined whether it might be the kind of the flexible gymnastics based on the Tang hand when the character of Karhand (karate?) Gymnastics was first seen. However, it seems not to be very so. However, it seems to call the Tang hand gymnastics. Why did you call it the Tang-hand gymnastics?

I have not understood this meaning much, but I can finally understand it recently. Now, as I mentioned last time, the martial arts were deemed inappropriate to teach in the school's Department of Education over twice, "the Gymnastics Report" (1884), "The School Hygiene Advisory Council Report" (1896). At that time, the Ministry of Education regarded the martial arts inferior from the physiological viewpoint compared with the gymnastics by irrational.

The person who caters to the policy of the Ministry of education like "halberd gymnastics" of Ozawa Unosuke Shoten and the person who does the political movement, and the martial arts, etc.  Now, the big question arises here. At that time, the Ministry of Education had not yet admitted the Department of Martial Arts adoption in the Department of Chinese Medicine (Meiji 38, 1905). A part of the "Ordinance for enforcement of the Junior high School Decree" was granted by the Ministry of Education Ordinance No. 26 of Meiji 44 (1911), "gymnastics ha bashing and gymnastics. In addition, it was revised as "to get the sword and Jiu-Jitsu", and it became possible to adopt the Shoken (later kendo) and Jiu-Jitsu (later judo). However, there is no wording of "karhand" (karate?) there.

In a word, it becomes impossible to adopt the Shotoaceae of the hand legally after that

At that time, it was impossible for the local government to decide the content of public education independently. The subjects, classes, and textbooks of junior high school and normal schools were established by the country (Minister of Education). Therefore, it is impossible for Okinawa Prefecture to adopt martial arts in the Department of Medicine in opposition to the national policy.

Then, why was the Karhand (karate?) adopted? This is the author's guess. Perhaps Dr. Yasuhisa Itoshima, etc., would have contacted the Okinawa Prefectural Academic Affairs Section about the possibility of adopting the shoshu of the Tang hand. At that time, the Academic affairs section, "because there is a national policy, Tang is impossible to employ as a martial art, but it is possible as a gymnastics," I think there was an answer.

This does not violate the policy of the Ministry of Education. There is a form to practice by one person named "type" Fortunately, and it is a kind of Deconstructo law act. If it is "gymnastics", it is possible to make excuses even if it is found in the country if it is strong. However, there is an excuse that it is not truly a martial art when there are a lot of attack techniques such as thrust kick. It is also difficult for students to be used to fight outside the school by promoting their struggle. If it becomes a newspaper, the head of the Student Affairs Section staff might fly.

So, in accordance with the request of the Academic Affairs section, I think that Mr. Iteshima did the creation modification of Pinann and existing type so as to dilute the aggression as much as possible.

If such a change was temporary, and the Chinese hand was formally adopted as a martial art, Mr. Iteshima might have intended to return it to the original type. The reason is that "it is not necessary to save as it is and to add the moist color" to "Itasu ten lesson" because there is a wording.

However, before the policy of the Ministry of Education changed, Mr. Iteshima lay on the sickbed, and died before long. On the other hand, it did not teach these types in the normal school after Mr. Iteshima was deceased because it was not interested in Pinann and the alteration type from the beginning. It might have been thought that it was likely to disappear naturally before long even if it left it. However, students who were taught the modified type from Mr. Iteshima, without knowing the circumstances that have been modified, and then spread the modified type, largely replaced by the existing type, the circumstances that have been altered before long I have forgotten.

And, it was not left in the record the circumstances that it had been adopted by the Department as a gymnastics (Karhand (karate?) gymnastics) not as a martial art hand. The author had not read the document which made a convincing explanation up to now about the Karhand (karate?) gymnastics.

The above is a guess to the end, and the record at that time of the communication of the Academic affairs section with teachers of Itasu is not understood, and I understand that it might have been so.

Select AJA memories on Shimabuku Tatsuo

Arcenio Advincula

In April 1975, Michie and I visited with Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei and Mrs. Shimabuku at his home in Agena, Gushikawa City, Okinawa..

When my Michie and I visited, I told Shimabuku Sensei that several Americans had stated that they had come to study with him but that Kichiro only introduced them to him. I said that Bill Duessel came in 1974 and Kichiro again only introduced him and that Bill Duessel had wanted to train with him.

At this moment, Mrs. Shimabuku admonished Tatsuo. " I told you' she said," you should have taught them, they come to see you, not Kichiro" Mrs. Shimabuku said. I was in stunned, it was the first time I ever heard Mrs. Shimabuku scold Tatsuo.

Tatsuo then said," Tell anyone else, if they come to Okinawa I will personally teach them."

During the same visit, Tatsuo told me that Kichiro was not talking to him. The reason Tatsuo said that he had rented some of the Agena dojo to a weight lifter. The weight lifter had set his weights up in part of the dojo. Sensei said Kichiro came in and saw the weights and asked his father what were these weights doing in the dojo. Sensei said that he was renting out this space because the dojo was only used in the evenings and didn't take up too much space plus he would make a little extra money.

According to Tatsuo Sensei, Kichiro blew up and and said he couldn't do this and that he, Kichiro needed the space. Tatsuo said that this was his home which was also the old Isshin-ryū Karate honbu dojo. Kichiro lived in a new house in Kinaka (Chan village). Tatsuo Sensei wanted to make a little money from renting space he wasn’t using. Kichiro ignored his fathers wishes and had all the weights removed and piled them up in a corner. The weight lifter came in the next day and got angry that his weights were moved and then left with his weights. Tatsuo naturally, lost the income from the weight lifter. So much for your home is your castle.

Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei said that Kaneshi Eiko, his right hand man had also left because of Kichiro. Tatsuo Sensei said that Kaneshi Eiko and other heads of other dojos had planned to have a demonstration to honor him and also to celebrate the anniversary of Isshin-ryu. They had arranged a meeting and planned the demonstration but Kichiro got mad and said they could not have the demonstration. Tatsuo Sensei backed Kaneshi Eiko and Kichiro again angrily said they couldn't hold the demo and said he was the head of Isshin-ryu and that was that!

In the last interview, Tatsuo Sensei said, Kichiro was going to open the new dojo at Kinaka on May 1975 (I'm not sure of the date). I asked Tatsuo Sensei if he was going to the Grand opening. Sensei said no. He wasn't invited. At the Grand opening of the Kinaka dojo, Tatsuo said, Kichiro was going to now officially claim he was the head of all Isshin-ryu.

I told Tatsuo sensei, "You are the head of all Isshin-ryū. You are my sensei. All the Americans follow you, not Kichiro. You should be there at the Grand opening." I then continued and said," I'll take you."

The day of the opening, I drove to the Kinaka dojo along with two of my students, Robert Embesie, Cyrus Bess and a friend of Embesie's. I then went to pick up Shimabuku Sensei at his home in Agena and brought him to New Kinaka dojo. Kichiro did not know Tatsuo Sensei was coming. All present paid respects to Tatsuo Sensei and Kichiro was demoralized.

A promotion exam was held with candidates free fighting and doing kata. Ceremonies were held, speeches made, and a photo session held. Kichiro asked me and my students to participate but I fibbed and told him we didn't have karate gi's. I did not want to be a part of his event where Kichiro was proclaiming he was the head of Isshin-ryū. I only wanted Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei to still be acknowledged as the head of Isshin-ryū and I was there along with my two students, Robert Embesei and Cyrus Bess to show and support Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei as the head of our style..

Inteview with Taira Kazu, August 29, 1997

Location: Harbor Hotel, Tairagawa, Gushikawa Shi, Okinawa

The interview was set up by Tokumura Kensho a friend of Taira Kazuo.

During the interview, Taira Kazu stated that he had trained with "Chan Migwa" at the Agricultural High School Karate Club located at the time in Kadena, from 1941 to 1943.
