The concept of the black, red and white obi came from a friend in a different tradition.
When in normal class it is work only with the black side
outside, making it almost indistinguishable from a normal black belt.
The Senior instructor wears the red stripe on top. Other
instructors wear the white side on top. Only for formal occasions are the
colored stripes worn outside.
It does not designate rank, just that one is an instructor.
When normally worn
with the stripes outside the obi does not signify rank, only the burden that
instructor carries
