Re breaking, I started in a school that was strong on breaking and weak on everything else. Sensei Chinen said that in Okinawa, there were two purposes for breaking... to test one's own increase in power periodically... this was to be kept private. And to put on a show during festivals for neighbors and friends. This was not designed to reveal max power.
