When you look at these old photos of Ginchin Funakoshi
showing how karate might be applied
and then compare it against karate of today,
you see how far things have changed as to the intent of stopping attack.
When facing an opponent kicking you,
the response was to end the opponent from attacking
Or against an opponent striking you,
again the response was designed to end the attacker.
The use of this Okinawan throw
could well be to drive them down atop their head,
again ending the attack.
Or when facing a bo attack,
Getting the hell out of dodge
Enough is shown/suggested that at one time
what became karate was very different from what
is considered karate today.
