Choyu Sensei was Tatsuo Sensei's first
formal instructor.
The evidence of this lies in the 1959
demonstration flier, which indicated that Tatsuo had trained for 32 years
before naming Isshin-ryu in 1956. This places his formal training as having
begun in 1924.
Other evidence comes in the form of
Sensei Steve Armstrong's book in which Armstrong mistakenly calls Motobu Choyu
"Gajoko Chioyu".
Furthermore, Sensei A.J. Advincula also
learned from Shimabuku Shinsho that Tatsuo Sensei had, in fact, trained with
Motobu Choyu.
Additionally, Uezu Angi Sensei, likewise,
has said that Tatsuo Sensei's first formal teacher was a Motobu. However, he
mistakenly said that it was Motobu Choki, which is not possible since it is
documented that Choki Sensei moved to Osaka in 1921, where he lived until 1942.
