Do versus Jutsu

If you have ever heard the words ‘Karate Do’ and ‘Karate Jutsu’ and wondered about the difference the glossary definition of Do in Geoff Gleason’s book “Judo Inside Out’ provides a useful definition of the difference between these suffixes.

Do [As in judo, kendo, zendo.] Literally meaning ‘way’ as in road or path and the figurative as in method of approach. It is related to jitsu, whose meaning can range from technique to creative crafts.

Do is the way of using jitsu, it is concerned with the philosophy of how to create.

Do is education, Jitsu is performance.

To my way of thinking when you learn as a beginner you are most concerned about Karate Jutsu.

And when you become the instructor your focus  become more and more concerned with Karate Do.

Of course not being a Japanese speaker I might not be clear enough on this, however this is as I see it at this time.
