Bujin - Seiken Tsuki

At the request of students of John Hamilton I'm sharing this article. It was referenced in my article on the Old Style Okinawan Fist on FightingArts.com  http://www.fightingarts.com/reading/article.php?id=215

A photo provided by Joe Swift showing the relationship of this fist to older budo technique.

Mark Tankosich Thank you, Smith Sensei! Brings back so many memories...

Dojo TokyoMushinkan Much closer to the correct "fist" of Budo than most other articles or books out there, in my experience! Some of the smaller nuances are not as I learned, though, and when using as an impact weapon can have major consequences… all in all GREAT article!

Victor Donald Smith This is how I was taught to strike in Sutrisno family Shotokan, though the change is for San Dan level training up. When forming the firt they roll the knuckles up one at a time, litle knuckle first.

Dojo TokyoMushinkan Here is a hint at the origins of the Budo (attached to the article)

Victor Smit - The reason it was taught at 3rd dan level, is while it forms a tighter fist for the first two knuckles, it is correspondingly weaker over the last two knuckles. The feeling is the other fist formation was safer for beginners (below 3rd Dan) who have less accuracy when striking. Then when the desired level of skill was reached you would then switch fist formation more safely.
