Rgarding Tatsuo Shimabuku and Naifanchi Kata

When you view the 1966 movie of Shimabuku Tatsuo where he does Naihanchi (Nihanchi, Nifanchi) you will see the Naihanchi kata performed by Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei.

First half old style with hook punch using old muscle memory.

Second half new style using spear-hand.

Of the three different versions shown on this video, that is the first one.

As it turns out I learned several different versions of Nairanchi back whenever.

I can no longer remember which one came first.

One version had the middle block then lower strike in the kata, both done with the left hand.

The other version had a simultaneous middle block and a simultaneous lower strike using both the left and right hand together.

Decades later I only taught the one version, but when ran the kata in later decades, I would begin with the one version and conclude the kata with the other version.

My own senior moment perhaps.
