Karate has much more in common with Judo than most realize. At Dan level the training originally included study of the kata, or classical two person exercises. The 4th kata, the Kime-No-Kata or Kata of is Defense, both kicking and striking are studied, reminiscent of karate itself. The first series is Idori or seated movements, the second series is Tachi=Ai or standing techniques. Here are some examples.
Never assume what is in the Judoka vocabulary.

These pictures are from a fantastic book! The author was Jigoro Kano’s best kata student, M. KawaishI, who taught in France. Kawaishi Sensei felt the French were to impatient to wait until Shodan. He was the one who introduced the rainbow of colors below black belt.
