The early days of the karate Funakoshi taught that later became quite different - Shotokan.

  

That's Gichen Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan, in black on the left.

Notice the what appears to be kata guruma(the throw in the middle)

& the grappling on the right. It looks like a judo class.

 

 Funakoshi did do a demonstration in front of Jigoro Kano at the Kodokan but he did not train in Judo. That makes this picture really interesting! After lots of research I think I've found the answer.


In 1935 Funakoshi published Karate-Do Kyohan, where he wrote 'In Karate, hitting, thrusting, & kicking are not the only methods, throwing techniques & pressure against joints are included.'

So much has been lost throughout the years!
