Defense of the slippage into the empty "About Gyaku and Nage (The Indispensability of the Study of the Gojo-ryo)" — by Mabuni Kenwa, 1938

"Because until the present time [1938] only parts of karate were presented in Tokyo, the people who train in Tokyo believe that karate consists only of punching and kicking techniques. From Gyaku-waza (liberations and counters, incl. lever techniques, transport and bull handles) and Nage-waza (throwing techniques), they assume that these are only present in the Jjutsu and Jado."

"This mindset is in itself extremely counterproductive with regard to karate, and it can only be a lack of knowledge or insight. In any case, this way of thinking resulted in only a small proportion of the karate introduced in Tokyo. Although this was forced to happen, this is an extremely unsatisfactory matter in terms of the spread of the karate-d'."

"I recommend the future of karate-d's in mind, not to cling to the nut shell of a style and a school, but rather to explore karate as a whole synthetically."

"In the Kata des Goju-ryu, which has not been presented in Tokyo until the present day, there is an interesting variety of gyaku-waza and nage-waza of karate, and the representatives of this style do not fail to carry out research on these gyaku-waza and nage-waza . (An example of this is a throwing technique as liberation from the double nelson, which can be found in a kata des Goju-ryu [note: see declaration p. 208])."

"Since the Goju-ryu study material (i.e. Kata) is plentiful, the students of karate should explore this style in detail. The powerful Japanese spirit* is revealed only by the independence in the approach."

Throwing technique as liberation from the double Nelson,

as taught in the Kururunfa of Goju-ryu. From: Mabuni and Nakasone, 1938.

* Nihon Seishin: Very popular in the early showa era, which looks at the Japanese spirit from a historical, ethical or philosophical point of view, often in the context of nationalist or military implications.

Note: This text was published in 1938 by Mabuni Kenwa. On social media, he finds himself widely divided but shortened in content, completely misbehaving out the connection between Goju-ryu and the technical knowledge of that time, which Mabuni intended. Today, 80 years later, everyone knows it anyway.

Reverse and throw (necessity of goju-ryu research)

Since only a small part of karate has been introduced in Tokyo in the past, people who have trained karate in Tokyo must say that karate is a lack of recognition to be able to be said to be in the very good and poor to be considered only in jiu-jitsu and judo if it is only the desire of the body and the kicking technique, and the reverse technique and the throwing technique. It was a very regrettable thing on the spread of karate to say that it was an unavoidable recognition shortage arising from the false (actual) that the introduction of karate was not slightly done on the half. Those who are determined for the future of karate will never have a narrow-minded mind in the first-class group, and will be able to study the whole karate in an integrated manner.

In the type of goju-ryu (school), there are various interesting things of karate throwing and reverse technique s/he has not been introduced to Tokyo, and the people of the school are not neglecting the research about the throwing technique and the reverse technique. (The throwing technique to remove the ha-crossing is an example in the type of the go-ju school.) Since there are a lot of materials to be studied willingly in the Goju-ryu, Karate practitioners want to demonstrate a great deal of infpassing with a "free and strong Japanese spirit".
