Onc
you have chosen the application that appeals to you the next step is to move
towards really being able to use it in many circumstances. (This process is necessary for every technique in every of
your kata, regardless of your system.)
This is the larger part of being able to actually trust the technique.
What
you need to do is train repeatedly against every sort of attack. Every
technique will not work against every attack. You must realize whatever
limitations.
The
basic study uses a step in punch to work against. Everyone must start
somewhere, but using that attack to learn the application possibility is one
thing, but not sufficient for what you may face when attacked.
First
realize the lead hand punch is as much as a punch as a lead hand grab which you
are more likely face. So work the lead hand grab then the rear hand grab. Learn how to make each work for you.
Or
a grab and a punch, or a grab and a kick.
Then
work the lead hand punch (or jab) then the reverse hand punch.
Work
against the attacker stepping away and
using either hand punching.
Work
against a right-left hand double strike.
Then work against a left –right hand double strike.
Work
against a right kick, then learn what happens when you face a left kici.
Works against a right punch and a left kick, then
against a right punch and a right kick. Also work against a left punch and a
right kick as well as a left punch aand a left kick.
By
now you see where this is going. Work every possibility of attack over and over
again. Against a slow attack, against faster and faster attacks.
Find
what works and master the application until
you reach Technique Realization. Only then do you really know the
application.
A
quick word of advice, a much larger challenge than just knowing that the
application is possible.
