Of course a Gedan-barai can be a
Gedan-barai, but in this variation is used as an attack against a sensitive
body part.
In this
variation here, you strike the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (that innervates
the skin on the lateral part of the thigh).
Otherwise, you
strike into the interstice between the vastus lateralis and the rectus femoris
muscles.
It is also used
against the side of the body.
For this
technique, you use a real snap in conjunction with a specific “hand-weapon” to
generate a stiletto effect. Properly done, it has a paralyzing effect on the
leg with severe local pain at the point of impact. However, it is one of those
techniques that is not too easy to make it work. It needs the real snap and
accuracy to strike the rather small target area.
