This might be a tall tale as it reportedly occurred before I was in the arts, but this is how I heard it.
Around
the early 1970s there was considerable enmity between karate players and kung
fu players at tournaments on the east coast. As I heard it there were plenty of
instructors in each group that did not exactly care for the other side of the
equation.
As
the story goes it occurred again at a George Dillman tournament in
Pennsylvania. Those were large tournaments drawing many from NYC, Philadelphia,
Baltimore and DC among other places.
I
am not sure what started it but suddenly Daniel Pai jumped out of his seat in
the stands, stomped on the floor when he landed and yelled out “We are going to
put a stop to this for all times. All you karate guys form a line on that side
of the floor. Then all you kung fu guy’s form a line on the other side.”
Amazingly
all there did that.
Then
Daniel Pai shouted out again: “ Now everyone have at it….”
Where
George Dillman ran out and put a stop to it.
At
least that is how I heard the story..
