In my day I competed against those with one arm missing, with one leg missing,
with no legs at all, against those with shaking palsy and even one man who was
blind, even one senior instructor who was in a wheel chair..
They
did not let their handicap define them they were just karate-ka.
I recall the day
when Henry Small walked into the men's changing room at a tournament, He
unstrapped his leg, put on his gi and went out to the tournament. He competed
in Men's black belt forms, kobudo forms, then he assisted judging different
divisions. Last he fought in men's black belt kumite. And with no legs at all.
He never let that define what he could do

I always remember my very good friend from Steelton, Pa. Ted Volrath. It was
astounding how good he was, and both legs were amputated above the
knee.....from the Korean War.
