The
beginning of "Operation Iceberg" Codename for the Invasion of Okinawa
It
began March 26, 1945
The
attack on Okinawa was preceded by the capture of the islands of the Kerama
group west of the southern tip of Okinawa which commenced on March 26. The
amphibious phases of this preliminary operation were commanded by Rear Admiral
I. N. Kiland, USN The troops consisted of the Seventy‑Seventh Army
Division under command of Major General Andrew D. Bruce, U.S.A. The capture of
these outposts was completed prior to the main landings on Okinawa and heavy
artillery is now emplaced there and in support of the Okinawa attack.

Operation Iceberg and the Invasion of Okinawa.
The landing began at Hagushi Beaches at the mouth of
the Hija River. Less the 2000 yards inland on the Hija River is the location
Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei began training with Kyan Chotoku on the Yomitan side of
the river.
The "red dot" on the map on the left, marks
Kyan Chotoku house where he taught taught Shimabuku Tatsuo.
The photo on the right is Kyan Chotoku house where he
taught karate. It was located next to the bank of the Hija river, adjacent to
the Hija river stone bridge. If you look closely to Kyan Chotoku's thatched
house, it is said that he is standing in the center.
According to Mrs. Shimabuku, her husband started
learning with Kyan Chotoku Sensei in 1932, the year she married her husband.
This history is important simply because of the
historic photo of Kyan Chotoku's house where he taught our founder at the Hija
river stone bridge, on the Yomitan side.
